3 Reasons Inclusion Should Matter to You

The principle of inclusion is very important in healthcare. It involves the accessibility of resources to all people regardless of their race, ethnicity, sexual orientation or physical disability. The lack of inclusivity is the very root of healthcare disparities. It leads to disproportionate care and varying outcomes. It is imperative as physicians we should seek equity for all patients and serve as an advocate. The lack of healthcare resources leads to decreased preventive care and long term, increased cost.
When health care systems are devoid of inclusive practices, it erodes trust within the community. We took an oath to do no harm. Our profession is built on altruism and we are called to a higher purpose. We do not get to choose our patients. We serve those in need no matter what. The basis of the doctor-patient relationship is trust and it must be preserved.
Poor patient outcomes are another reason you should be fighting for inclusion within healthcare. When certain patients are denied access to health care services, their outcomes are worse. They often present to health care settings in later stages of disease with poorer prognosis and higher mortality. We owe it to our patients to advocate for diversity and inclusion because their lives depend on it and it’s the right thing to do!
